Function Overview

GaussDB is an enterprise-grade distributed relational database from Huawei. It features hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP) workloads and intra-city cross-AZ deployment with zero data loss. With a distributed architecture, GaussDB supports petabytes of storage and contains more than 1,000 nodes per DB instance. It is highly available, secure, and scalable and provides service capabilities including quick deployment, backup, restoration, monitoring, and alarm reporting for enterprises. 

GaussDB provides the following two billing modes:

• Yearly/monthly: It provides a larger discount than pay-per-use billing and is recommended for long-term use.
• Pay-per-use (hourly): It allows you to pay for only the resources you actually use. Less than one hour will be calculated as one full hour.

GaussDB provides multiple modes for connecting to DB instances.

You can bind an EIP to your instance to enable public network access and can unbind the EIP later if needed.

• If your instance already has an EIP bound, you must unbind the EIP from the instance first before binding a new EIP to it.

GaussDB can use real-time synchronization of Data Replication Service (DRS) to migrate data from on-premises Oracle databases to Huawei Cloud GaussDB. Full and incremental synchronization can ensure the long-term data synchronization between the source Oracle database and the destination GaussDB database.

You can reboot a DB instance for the parameter modifications to take effect.

• The instance that you want to reboot must be in the Available.
• Rebooting a DB instance will cause service interruptions. During this period, the DB instance status is Rebooting.
• The instance is not available when it is being rebooted. After the reboot completes, the cached memory will be automatically cleared. You are advised to reboot the instance during off-peak hours.

If you forget the password of the root account when using GaussDB, you can reset the password.

• If the DB instance is abnormal, the administrator password cannot be reset.
• The volume of data being processed by the instance determines how long it takes for the new password to take effect.
• To prevent brute force cracking and ensure system security, change your password periodically.
• You cannot reset the administrator password when the account is frozen.

The storage space of a GaussDB instance may be insufficient as service volumes grow. When the kernel detects that the disk usage exceeds 85%(default value of the parameter cms:datastorage_threshold_value_check. You can change the value as needed), the instance is set to read-only and no data can be written to the instance. You can scale up the storage of the instance.

• Within the maximum allowed range, usage cannot exceed 85% of the total storage space after scaling.
• If any node becomes faulty, contact O&M engineers for troubleshooting.

As DB instance deployment time and service volumes increase, the database performance and storage will gradually reach a bottleneck. Adding nodes can improve the instance performance and storage capacity. You can add nodes for GaussDB instances, but the number of CNs of a DB instance cannot exceed twice the number of shards.

GaussDB lets you back up and restore your instances to ensure data reliability.

You can restore a backup file to a DB instance or restore the instance to a specific point in time.

• The Cloud Eye service monitors DB instance statuses. You can view the DB instance monitoring metrics on the management console.
• You can create alarm rules to specify the monitored objects and notification policies and to keep abreast of instance statuses.

You can use database parameter templates to manage DB engine configurations.

When creating a DB instance, you can associate a default or custom parameter template with the DB instance. After a DB instance is created, you can also change the associated parameter template.

Each default parameter template contains database engine defaults and database system defaults.

• Custom parameter templates

If you want to use your own parameter settings, you can create a custom parameter template and apply it to your DB instance.

You can configure security group rules to allow only specific IP addresses to access your instances. The default security group rule allows all outgoing data packets. ECSs and GaussDB instances in the same security group can access each other by default. You can then define different access control rules for a security group, and these rules take effect for all instances added to this security group.

You can invoke APIs to perform a range of operations, such as creating a DB instance, deleting a DB instance, querying parameters, and scaling up storage.

Tag Management Service (TMS) enables you to use tags on the management console to manage resources. TMS works with other cloud services to manage tags. TMS manages tags globally, and other cloud services manage their own tags.

• You are advised to set predefined tags on the TMS console.
• A tag consists of a key and value. You can add only one value for each key.
• Each DB instance can have up to 20 tags.
