Cluster Upgrades
CCE clusters comply with Kubernetes conformance certification. Three cluster versions are launched each year, and each version is maintained for at least 24 months to ensure long-term stable operations for the production environment. It is recommended that you upgrade the clusters before the maintenance period ends to keep up with new features, fix vulnerabilities, and stay secure.
Before upgrading a cluster, you can learn more about the upgrades by referring to Cluster Upgrade Overview and Before You Start.
Upgrade Paths
CCE clusters evolve iteratively based on the community Kubernetes version. A CCE cluster version consists of the community Kubernetes version and the patch version, so there are two cluster upgrade paths.
- Kubernetes version upgrade: Upgrade a cluster from the current major version (for example, v1.23) to a later major version (for example, v1.24). This type of upgrade usually involves major improvements such as API version changes and core function evolution.
- Patch version upgrade: Patch version management is available for CCE clusters to provide new features and fix bugs and vulnerabilities for in-maintenance clusters without requiring a major version upgrade. After a new patch version is released, you can upgrade the cluster to the latest patch version in one click.
Upgrade Process
The cluster upgrade process involves pre-upgrade check, backup, upgrade, and verification after the upgrade.

- Pre-upgrade check: Before an upgrade, CCE automatically checks the cluster status, add-on status, and workload compatibility to ensure that the cluster meets the upgrade requirements.
- Backup: CCE uses snapshots to back up the control plane data such as component images, component configurations, and etcd data.
- Configuration and upgrade: Parameters need to be configured before an upgrade. CCE comes with default settings that can be modified as needed. After the configuration, the add-ons, control plane, and data plane will be upgraded in sequence.
- Verification after the upgrade: After the upgrade is complete, CCE automatically checks the cluster status. You need to manually verify services and new pods to ensure that the cluster functions normally after the upgrade.
