Discovering Servers
The MgC Agent (formerly Edge) allows you to discover local servers and collect their details without the need of a connection to MgC.
Precautions
After being connected to MgC, the MgC Agent mainly works with cloud services. You are advised to connect the MgC Agent to MgC after all necessary local collection tasks are complete, so that cloud services can be used for migration and management.
Methods for Discovering Servers
There are three methods for using the MgC Agent to discover servers locally.
- VMware collection: You provide the IP addresses and credentials of vCenter Servers to discover all VMs they manage.
- RVTools data import: You can import the report generated by RVTools to the MgC Agent. Then the MgC Agent can extract information about servers.
- Network range scan: You can use the MgC Agent to scan for servers on a specific network range over the intranet.
Prerequisites
You have installed the MgC Agent. For details, see Installing the MgC Agent.
VMware Collection
Only VMware vSphere 5.0 to 7.0 are supported.
- Sign in to the MgC Agent console.
- In the navigation pane, choose Resources.
- Click Discover Servers above the list.
- Set Discovery Mode to VMware collection and set Connection Address to the IP address of your vCenter Server.
- Select Add new credential for Credential and enter the username and password for accessing the vCenter Server. The account must have full access to all VMs managed by the vCenter Server.
- After the parameters are set, click OK. The Server Discovery Tasks page is displayed, and the MgC Agent starts to discover server resources. When the task status changes to Completed, you can view the discovered servers on the Resources page.
If these servers need to be migrated, perform a deep collection for them.
RVTools Data Import
You need first to export resources details from RVTools.
Then import the RVTools data to the MgC Agent by following the requirements below:
- The supported RVTools versions include 4.4.1, 4.4.2, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 4.4.5, 4.5.0, 4.5.1, and 4.6.1.
- The file must be in XLSX format.
- The file size cannot exceed 100 MB.
- The file name can contain only letters, digits, periods (.), underscores (_), and hyphens (-).
- Sign in to the MgC Agent console.
- In the navigation pane, choose Resources.
- Click Discover Servers above the list.
- Set Discovery Mode to RVTools data import, click Add File, and select the file exported from RVTools.
- Click OK to upload the file. The Server Discovery Tasks page is displayed. When the task status changes to Completed, you can view the discovered servers on the Resources page.
If these servers need to be migrated, perform a deep collection for them.
Network Range Scan
- Sign in to the MgC Agent console.
- In the navigation pane, choose Resources.
- Click Discover Servers above the list.
- Set Discovery Mode to Network range scan and set parameters based on Table 1.
Table 1 Parameters for scanning a network range Parameter
Description
Protocol
Only TCP is available.
Network Range
Enter an IP address range which must fall within:
- 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
- 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
- 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255
Linux
Enter a port to scan for Linux servers. If you do not need to scan for Linux servers, set the port number to 0.
Windows
Enter a port to scan for Windows servers. If you do not need to scan for Windows servers, set the port number to 0.
- After the parameters are set, click OK. The Server Discovery Tasks page is displayed, and the MgC Agent starts to discover server resources. When the task status changes to Completed, you can view the discovered servers on the Resources page.
If these servers need to be migrated, perform a deep collection for them.
Performing a Deep Collection for Servers
After server resources are discovered, perform the following steps to perform a deep collection for them:
- In the resource list, click Associate in the Credential column.
- Select the server credential.
- If the server credential has been added to the MgC Agent, select it from the drop-down list. Click Verify Credential to verify the validity of the selected server credential.
- If the server credential has not been added to the MgC Agent, click Add Credential and add the server credential. Then select it from the drop-down list. Click Verify Credential to verify the validity of the selected server credential.
The credentials you provide must have sufficient permissions, so the MgC Agent can collect necessary server details. Deep collection requires that the credentials you provide meet the following requirements:
- Linux: root and its password
- Windows: administrator and its password
- Click Change in the Access Port column. Enter the accessible port of the server.
- Locate the resource you just configured and click Deep Collection above the list. The system starts collecting server details. The Deep Collection column displays the collection result.
- If the collection is successful, click View Configuration in the Operation column to view the collected resource information.
- If the collection fails, move the cursor to Collection failed to view the failure cause.
- If the collection is successful, click View Configuration in the Operation column to view the collected resource information.
Exporting Server Information
On the Resources tab, click Export to save the information of all or selected servers as a CSV or JSON file to the local PC.
