Importing RVTools Data

Notes and Constraints

  • Supported RVTools versions

    The supported RVTools versions include:

    • 4.4.1
    • 4.4.2
    • 4.4.3
    • 4.4.4
    • 4.4.5
    • 4.5.0
    • 4.5.1
    • 4.6.1
  • File format requirements

    Only the Excel (.xlsx) format is supported.

  • File size and compression ratio requirements

    The file to be imported cannot be larger than 100 MB, and the compression ratio cannot be lower than 5%.

Step 1: Exporting RVTools Data

  1. Start the RVTools application.

  2. On the login page, enter the following information:

    • In the IP address/Name text box, enter IP address of the vCenter server.
    • In the User name text box, enter the username for connecting to the vCenter server.
    • In the Password text box, enter the password corresponding to the username.

  3. Click Login. In the top menu bar, choose File > Export all to Excel.
  4. Select a path for saving the file that contains details about your resource.

Step 2: Uploading the Exported File to OBS

  1. Sign in to Huawei Cloud OBS console and create a Standard bucket for storing the file exported from RVTools. For details, see Creating a Bucket.
  2. Upload the file exported from RVTools to the Standard OBS bucket. For details, see Uploading an Object.

Step 3: Importing RVTools Data

  1. Sign in to the MgC console.
  2. In the navigation pane on the left, choose Research > Application Discovery. Select a migration project in the upper left corner of the page.
  3. If you are creating an import task for the first time, in the Tool Discovery card, choose Import > RVTools data. If you have created import tasks before, in the Discovery Task card, choose Import > RVTools data.

    If you are using this function for the first time, click OK in the Authorization Required dialog box to agree to the agency-based authorization.

  4. In the File drop-down list, locate the OBS bucket you used to store the file exported from RVTools in Step 2, select the exported file, and click Confirm.
  5. After the upload is successful, in the Discovery Task card, click View next to Total tasks tasks. On the task list page that is displayed, view the task status.

    • If the task status is Failed, click View in the Operation column to view the data source that failed to be collected. You can move the cursor to the collection status of the data source to view the failure cause. After handling the failure cause, you need to delete the failed task and perform a second import.

    • If the task status is Succeeded, you can view the imported resource details and resource statistics.

Viewing Resource Details

If the status of the RVTools import task is Succeeded, you can view the details of VMware servers, including the hostname, server ID, IP address, specifications, OS type, and platform.

  1. On the Application Discovery page, click the Resources tab and click Server in the Category column or the number in the Server row.

  2. In the server list, you can view the imported server information. You can click a resource name to view more details.

Viewing Resource Statistics

If the status of the RVTools import task is Succeeded, you can view the VMware resource statistics under the corresponding tab.
  • Host: CPU model, host quantity, total memory, allocated VM memory, memory allocation rate, VM quantity, quantity of running VMs, storage usage, and host list.
  • VMs: the number of Windows OS versions, number of Linux OS distributions, total memory, total number of vCPU, number of disks, disk capacity, number of VMs, and VM list
  1. On the Application Discovery page, click VMware Resources in the Resource box.

  2. On the displayed Resource Statistics page, click the Host or VM tab to view resource statistics.
