Functions

This section outlines the key features supported by LakeFormation. You can check if a certain function is available in a region on the console.

Instance Management

  • Before using LakeFormation, create an instance. Then, you can perform operations on the instance, such as managing metadata and setting metadata permissions. For details, see Creating a LakeFormation instance.
  • LakeFormation provides basic functions such as instance configuration, scaling, and deletion, helping you easily manage instances and accelerate the planning and deployment of services carried by the data lake. For details, see Instance Management.
  • LakeFormation provides different types of instances to meet customers' different requirements for performance and costs in different scenarios. For details, see Comparison Between Shared and Exclusive Instances.

Metadata Management

LakeFormation allows you to create, modify, view, and delete catalogs, databases, and tables. It also supports metadata life cycle configuration. It facilitates easy initialization and ongoing operations of your data lake and provides centralized and unified management of all metadata under the LakeFormation instance, thereby accelerating the planning and deployment of data lake services.

For details, see Creating LakeFormation Metadata and LakeFormation Metadata Management.

Data Permission Management

LakeFormation allows you to authorize, cancel, and view data resources such as catalogs, databases, and tables. It helps you implement convenient and unified data permission management for the data lake.

For details, see Configuring LakeFormation Metadata Permissions and LakeFormation Data Permission Management.

Job Management

LakeFormation supports migration of metadata and permissions from external services to the current LakeFormation instance for unified management.

For details, see Migrating Metadata and Permissions to LakeFormation.

Access Management

LakeFormation provides unified access management capabilities. You can create an access client to establish a network connection channel for a specified client environment. In addition, you can view information such as the access IP address and access domain name in the client details for other cloud services to access LakeFormation instances.

For details, see Creating a LakeFormation Access Client.
