Supported Extensions

The following table lists the extensions supported by the latest minor versions of RDS for PostgreSQL. You can use SELECT name FROM pg_available_extensions; to view the extensions supported by your DB instance. If any of the following extensions is not supported by your PostgreSQL version, migrate your data to an RDS for PostgreSQL instance of the latest version.

The extensions mysql_fdw, dblink, postgres_fdw, and tds_fdw are used to access data stored in remote database servers. Before using any of them, ensure that the server IP addresses of the two DB instances are in the same VPC and subnet.

Extension Description

  • postgis
    • Creating postgis_topology and postgis_tiger_geocoder will change the search_path settings. However, this change will not take effect for established connections. To use the two extensions, re-establish a connection to update the search_path settings.
  • plpgsql

    plpgsql 1.0 provides the SQL procedural language and is installed by default.

  • earthdistance

    To install the earthdistance extension, you must install the cube extension first.

  • cube

    If the earthdistance extension has been installed, deleting the cube extension will cause the earthdistance extension to be unavailable.

  • TimescaleDB

    The TimescaleDB extension of RDS for PostgreSQL supports only the features of the Apache protocol. It does not support the features of the TSL protocol. For details, see APIs Not Supported by TimescaleDB.

  • wal2json, postgres-decoderbufs

    They are logical replication extensions. You can use them directly without installing them through control_extension.

    They are not listed in the pg_available_extensions view. To check whether the two extensions are supported, run the statements below. If no error is reported during the execution, the extensions are supported.

    • wal2json 
      select pg_create_logical_replication_slot('tst_wal2json', 'wal2json');
    • postgres-decoderbufs 
      select pg_create_logical_replication_slot('tst_decoderbufs', 'decoderbufs');
    After the execution, delete the slot to prevent WAL log accumulation.
    • Delete the slot tst_wal2json. 
      select pg_drop_replication_slot('tst_wal2json');
    • Delete the slot tst_decoderbufs. 
      select pg_drop_replication_slot('tst_decoderbufs');
  • pg_profile_pro

    This extension is not supported temporarily due to its defects. It will be open to you after the defects are rectified. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

  • pg_sql_history

    This extension is used by Database Security Service (DBSS) to audit SQL operations of RDS for PostgreSQL instances. SQL statements retrieved by this extension may be truncated because each record is allocated a fixed space of 4 KB. This space includes a retrieved SQL statement along with information such as the database name, username, and SQL type.
