Applying a Policy to a Vault
Scenarios
Manual backup or replication of resources can lead to incomplete operations or inconsistent configurations. This may result in resources in the vault not being protected in time. In the event of an accidental action or a network attack, there may be no available backup for rapid data restoration.
You can apply a backup or replication policy to a vault to run backup or replication tasks at specified times or intervals. The generated backups or replicas can then be used to restore data quickly if data becomes corrupted or lost.
Principles
You can use backup and replication policies to define standard rules for protecting resources associated with vaults. After a policy is applied, the resources are automatically backed up or replicated according to the defined policy. These policies provide unified management in the following areas:
- Unified management of backup rules: You can configure the backup time and backup frequency in a backup policy. All vaults associated with this policy automatically perform backups as scheduled. This eliminates manual configuration and ensures consistent backup behavior across vaults.
- Unified management of replication rules: You can use replication policies to periodically replicate backup data to a vault in another region. This provides cross-region data protection.
- Unified management of backup retention rules: You can define backup retention rules (by quantity, by time, or permanent retention) in a policy to manage the lifecycle of backups in a vault. Backups that exceed the retention period are automatically deleted.
Constraints
- You can create multiple policies, but can apply only one backup or replication policy to a vault.
Procedure
- Log in to the CBR console. Click
in the upper left corner and select a region. - Locate the target vault and choose More > Apply Backup Policy or More > Apply Replication Policy. Figure 1 Applying a backup policy

- Select an existing backup policy from the drop-down list or create a new one. For how to create a policy, see Creating a Backup Policy and Creating a Replication Policy.
- After the policy is successfully applied, view details in the Policies area on the vault details page.
