Vault Capacity

Description

The capacity of a vault ranges from 10 GB to 10485760 GB. Properly plan your vault capacity, which must be at least the same as the size of the resources you want to back up. Also, if automatic association is enabled and a backup policy is applied, more capacity is required. As the vault's used space grows, you can expand the vault capacity if it becomes insufficient.

Plan your vault capacity based on the following:

Manual backup

If only manual backups are required, there may be the cases that the backup size is greater than the used disk size, so you are advised to specify a vault capacity at least twice the size of the resources to be backed up.

Automatic backup

If automatic backups are required, estimate the vault capacity using the following formula:

Vault capacity (GB) = [Disk capacity (GB) + Backup retention period (days)/Backup frequency (days) x Daily data changes (GB)] x 200%

If you configure to keep backups by quantity, you can convert the number of retained backups to the backup retention period and then use the preceding formula. For example, if a company backs up data once a day and configures to retain 7 backups, the retention period can be considered as 7 days.

Vault capacity can be expanded. You can adjust the vault capacity based on your service needs.

Example

A financial company has an 800 GB cloud server, has used 200 GB of it, and its daily data changes are about 10 GB. As scheduled, the company's data is backed up twice at 02:00 and 20:00 every day, and backups are retained for a month. The estimated vault capacity of the company is as follows: (Note that the vault capacity, instead of the used capacity, is used in the calculation.)

Estimated vault capacity = [800 + 30/1 x 10] x 200% = 2,200 GB

FAQ

Will Backup Continue If My Vault Capacity Has Reached the Upper Limit?

If the vault is just used up or its remaining space is not enough for the next backup, the next backup can be executed successfully.

After that, CBR will not execute any backups.

Can a Vault Be Automatically Expanded?

Yes. If you want a vault to be automatically expanded when its capacity is used up, enable auto capacity expansion.

Once enabled, the vault capacity will be automatically expanded to 1.25 times the capacity of the original vault when the vault's used capacity has exceeded the maximum.

Procedure

  1. In the vault list, locate your vault and click the vault name.
  2. On the vault details page, enable Auto Capacity Expansion.
  3. (Optional) Disable Auto Capacity Expansion if you no longer need it.

Can CBR Sends Notifications When the Vault Capacity Reaches a Certain Threshold?

Yes.

CBR uses Simple Message Notification (SMN) for message notifications. You can enable or disable notifications as needed. Once enabled, CBR will automatically send you notifications when the vault usage exceeds the threshold you set. In this way, you can learn about the vault capacity in real time.
