Sensitive Data Discovery and Monitoring

After creating a sensitive data discovery task, you can proceed with the sensitive data discovery process.

The sensitive data discovery process is straightforward: identify the task that requires sensitive data discovery and then click Discover.

Procedure

  1. Logging In to the Database Encryption System using the system administrator (sysadmin) account.
  2. Select Project Management from the left navigation tree.
  3. When hovering the mouse over an item in the project list that requires a discovery task to be executed, the item displays its current status as shown in Figure 1.

  4. Click Enter to access the project management homepage, as shown in Figure 2.

  5. Click the Discovery and Analysis menu on the left to view all previously saved discovery tasks, as shown in Figure 3.

  6. Locate the discovery task to be executed; click the Discover button next to the discovery task, and the task will begin execution. The discovery task list is shown in Figure 4; the parameter descriptions for this list are provided in Table 1.

    Parameter

    Description

    Discovery Task Name

    Find task name.

    Analysed Results

The percentage of data that has been successfully discovered and organized.

That is, the proportion of data entries with the status Confirmed out of the total number of entries.

    Database Type

The database type used for executing the discovery task.

    Operator

The login username for performing the operation.

    Creation Time

    Task creation time.

    Modification Time

The time when the task was saved after modification.

    Remark

    User-defined note information.

  7. After clicking Find, the system will display a prompt before the task is executed, as shown in Figure 5.

  8. Click Confirm – the system will then automatically initiate the sensitive data discovery process.

    Figure 6 Discovery progress

As shown in Figure 6, it consists of four sections, specifically:

    • Progress indicator: A light blue circular icon in the top-left corner. Displays two pieces of information: the percentage of tasks completed and the number of scanned tables that have been completed.
    • Execution process: The top-right window displays the tables that have been scanned; this list is updated in real time during execution.
    • Execution failed: During execution, failures may occur for various reasons; this window displays the table(s) where the execution failed, along with the reason for the failure.

  9. Monitor the execution process.

When the number of tables is large, the execution time can be significantly prolonged. The primary factors affecting performance include the database type and the complexity of the discovery rules.

The execution time for a table is approximately 1–2 seconds. During execution, you can close the monitoring window; the process will still run in the background.

To view the monitoring interface, select Monitoring from the task list to return to the monitoring window, as shown in Figure 7.

Figure 7 Accessing the monitoring interface

  10. Click Monitoring on the Discovery Task to navigate to the aforementioned Discovery Progress page.
  11. Click Discover – the Discover task will run in the background; leaving the current page will not affect the execution of the Discover task.

This feature is primarily intended for situations where, upon detecting that a task is running for an extended period, the operator may leave the discovery interface to perform other tasks; if you need to continue monitoring the task's progress, simply click Monitor.
