FAQs About TaurusDB Backups
This section describes FAQs about TaurusDB backups.
How Long Does TaurusDB Store Backup Data?
Automated backup data is kept based on the backup retention period you specified. For details, see Configuring a Same-Region Backup Policy.
There is no limit for the manual backup retention period. You can delete manual backups as needed. For details, see Deleting Manual Backups.
Backups are stored in OBS and do not occupy your purchased storage space.
How Can I Check My TaurusDB Backup Space Usage?
The TaurusDB backup space stores automated backups and manual backups. You can check the backup space usage in the Storage and Backup area on the TaurusDB console and clean up the backup space as needed.
- Log in to the TaurusDB console.
- On the Instances page, click the instance name to go to the Basic Information page.
- In the Storage and Backup > Backup Space area, check the backup space usage.

- There are full and incremental backups of a DB instance in the backup space.
- Free backup space of the same size as your purchased storage space is provided.
How Can I Clean up TaurusDB Backup Space?
- Cleaning up automated full and incremental backups
Automated backups cannot be manually deleted. To delete them, you can adjust the retention period specified in your backup policy. Retained backups will be automatically deleted at the end of the retention period.
- Cleaning up manual full backups
You can manually delete manual backups. For details, see Deleting Manual Backups.
How Is TaurusDB Backup Data Billed?
TaurusDB backups are stored on OBS. They do not occupy the storage of your instance. TaurusDB provides free backup space of the same size as your purchased storage space.
For example, if you purchase a DB instance with 200 GB of storage, you can get an additional 200 GB of backup space and are only charged for backups in excess of 200 GB. The first 200 GB of backup data is free. After the free backup space is used up, the additional space used will be billed on a pay-per-use basis. For pricing details, see Product Pricing Details.
If your storage is frozen, it is no longer billed and the free backup space is also unavailable.
If your instance is frozen, no free backup space is available. As a result, the original automated backups of the instance will be billed.
- If you unfreeze the instance, the free backup space will be restored.
- If you directly delete the frozen instance, its automated backups will also be deleted and the backup space will not be billed any longer.
Why Has the Backup Duration Suddenly Increased Compared to Previous Days?
TaurusDB defaults to a 7-day backup cycle, with a full backup on the first day and differential backups for the following 6 days. A full backup takes longer time than a differential backup.
For example, a full backup was performed on March 1, differential backups were performed from March 2 to March 7, and a full backup was performed again on March 8. The backups on March 1 and March 8 take relatively longer. This is a normal phenomenon in TaurusDB backups. Just wait until the backups are complete. For more details, see Comparison Between Full Backups, Differential Backups, and Incremental Backups.
Will TaurusDB Backup Data Uploaded to OBS Be Compressed?
No. TaurusDB implements differential backups, which reduce the amount of backup data, similar to compression. For details about differential backups, see Backup Types.
Why Is There a Difference Between the Data in the Original Instance A and the New Instance B After Full Data of Instance A Is Restored to Instance B?
Assume that the current time is March 2 and the restoration time of the new instance B is March 1. The original instance A performed write operations between March 1 and March 2, and these write operations are not restored to instance B. So, there is a difference between the data in instance A and instance B.
Does TaurusDB's Full Backup Data Cutoff Occur at the Beginning or End of the Backup?
It occurs at the beginning of the backup. When performing a full backup, TaurusDB first creates a snapshot to ensure data consistency and then starts the backup process. Data written after the snapshot is created is not included in the full backup but is instead uploaded as an incremental backup. During restoration, the full backup and incremental backup are combined to ensure data consistency.
How Can I Back Up a TaurusDB Database to an ECS?
You can back up data to an ECS in the same way you export SQL statements. The ECS service does not have restrictions on the types of data to be backed up as long as the data complies with local laws and regulations. You can store database backup data on an ECS. However, you are advised not to use an ECS as the database backup space.
You are advised to use TaurusDB automated backups and manual backups to back up data to OBS for higher data reliability and service assurance.
