Can My RDS Instance Still Be Used in the Backup Window?

A backup window is a user-specified time during which RDS instances create backups. Using regularly created backups, you can restore RDS instances to a point in time within the backup retention period.

  • During a backup window, you can still use your RDS instance except rebooting it on the console.
  • When starting a full backup task, the system first tests connectivity to your instance. If either of the following conditions is met, the test fails and a retry is performed. If the retry fails, the backup task fails.
    • The system is performing DDL operations on this instance.
    • The system fails to obtain the backup lock from this instance.
