Changing a Floating IP Address
Scenarios
You can change floating IP addresses after migrating on-premises databases or other cloud databases to RDS.
Constraints
After read/write splitting is enabled, the floating IP addresses of primary DB instances and read replicas cannot be changed.
Changing the floating IP address will interrupt the database connection. You are advised to change a floating IP address during off-peak hours.
Only floating IPv4 addresses can be changed.
Procedure
When you buy a DB instance, select a VPC and subnet on the Buy DB Instance page. Then, a floating IP address will be automatically assigned to your instance.
You can change the floating IP address of an existing DB instance.
- Click
in the upper left corner and select a region.
- Click
in the upper left corner of the page and choose Databases > Relational Database Service.
- On the Instances page, click the instance name to go to the Overview page.
- Under Floating IP Address, click Configure.
Alternatively, in the navigation pane on the left, choose Connectivity & Security. In the Connection Information area, click Change next to the Floating IP Address field.
Figure 1 Floating IP address - In the displayed dialog box, check the number of in-use IP addresses. If the in-use IP addresses are less than 254, there are unused floating IP addresses.

- Select an available IP address and click OK.
An in-use IP address cannot be used as the new floating IP address of the DB instance.
- If you have enabled operation protection, click Send Code in the displayed Identity Verification dialog box and enter the obtained verification code. Then, click OK.

FAQ
- Question 1: Do I Need to Change the Application Connection Address After Changing the Floating IP Address of My DB Instance?
- If your application accesses the DB instance through the floating IP address, changing this address on the console will interrupt the database connection. To reconnect your application to the DB instance, you need to change the connection address for the application.
- If your application accesses the DB instance through its private domain name, changing the floating IP address does not interrupt services.
- Question 2: Does the New Floating IP Address Is Applied Immediately? Is an Instance Reboot Required?
The new floating IP address is applied immediately. You do not need to reboot the DB instance.
- Question 3: After the Floating IP Address of a DB Instance Is Changed, Can the Original IP Address Be Used for Another Instance?
- Question 4: Does the Floating IP Address of a DB Instance Change After a Primary/Standby Switchover?
A primary/standby switchover does not change the connection information of an instance, including the VPC, subnet, security group, floating IP address, private domain name, and database port.
