Overview

Backup is needed for critical data in an application system. If there are virus attacks, accidental deletions, and software and hardware faults, data can be quickly restored from backups.

A disaster recovery (DR) system replicates data in real time but lacks multiple backup points. If standby data on the active side is deleted or modified by mistake, the incorrect data will be synchronized to the standby side. In this case, DR cannot replace backup.

The recovery point objective (RPO) (the maximum acceptable amount of data loss) in backup and restore is determined by the time point when the last backup was created. Different types of data may tolerate different amounts of data loss, which means they require different RPOs. To meet the RPO requirements of data backups, use periodic automatic backup, rather than manual backup.
