Overview of Using Direct Connect to Access OBS
Scenarios
Direct Connect allows you to establish a stable, high-speed, low-latency, and secure dedicated network connection between your on-premises Internet Data Center (IDC) and Huawei Cloud. This allows you to fully utilize your existing on-premises IT infrastructure while taking advantage of cloud services to build a flexible, scalable hybrid cloud computing environment. For more information, see Direct Connect. Using Direct Connect to access OBS has the following advantages:
- Stable and efficient performance: Direct Connect provides stable network with high bandwidth and low latency. This ensures high-speed transmission when a large amount of data in OBS is frequently accessed. Direct Connect also helps avoid transmission jitter or interruptions caused by public network congestion or fluctuations, delivering reliable performance for scenarios such as data backup, disaster recovery, and real-time data analytics.
- Secure and reliable data transmission: Direct Connect establishes a private, encrypted network channel between your on-premises IDC and the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). Physically isolated from public networks, this channel avoids potential security risks and interference of public network transmission. This ensures high security and confidentiality when critical service data is uploaded to or downloaded from OBS.
You can access OBS via Direct Connect by using the private IP address of an OBS bucket or an Elastic Load Balance (ELB) proxy.
Background
Before using Direct Connect to access OBS, you may want to know:
- OBS bucket domain name: After a bucket is created, OBS generates a default domain name in the BucketName.obs.RegionID.myhuaweicloud.com format. For example, the domain name of the bucket example-bucket in CN North-Beijing4 is example-bucket.obs.cn-north-4.myhuaweicloud.com.
- Private IP address of an OBS bucket: The address for accessing an OBS bucket over a Huawei Cloud intranet. Resolving a bucket's domain name through private DNS returns a private IP address, whereas resolving it through public DNS returns a public IP address. If you want to access OBS over an intranet, the client and the bucket must be in the same region. For example, an IDC in CN North-Beijing4 can access the OBS bucket in CN North-Beijing4 over an intranet.
- ELB proxy: Elastic Load Balance automatically distributes incoming traffic across multiple backend servers based on the routing policies you configure. After an ELB proxy is configured for an OBS bucket, IDC clients only need to send requests to the private IP address of the load balancer in the VPC. The load balancer then forwards the requests to the OBS bucket.
Solutions
| Item | Using the Private IP Address of an OBS Bucket | Using an ELB Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Application scenarios | A commonly used method, for which a private DNS needs to be configured | If IP address planning or other constraints prevent you from configuring routes to OBS private IP addresses or Direct Connect IP addresses in your on-premises IDC, you can use an ELB proxy to access the private IP address segment of the VPC. |
| Access domain name | Bucket domain name | N/A |
| Access address | Private IP address of an OBS bucket | Private IP address of the ELB in the VPC |
| DNS configuration | Private DNS | N/A |
| Reference |
As shown in Figure 1, when an IDC accesses an OBS bucket domain name, the private DNS resolves the domain name and returns the bucket's private IP address. Then, the IDC uses the private IP address to access OBS through a VPC endpoint. For details, see Using a Private IP Address to Access OBS.
As shown in Figure 2, an IDC sends a request to the private IP address of the ELB in the VPC. The ELB forwards the request that is later routed to OBS through a VPC endpoint. For details, see Using an ELB Proxy to Access OBS.
