Estimating Vault Capacity with the Capacity Calculator

Scenarios

The Huawei Cloud backup vault capacity calculator is designed for planning scenarios such as presales solution design, financial budgeting, capacity expansion assessment for existing workloads, and backup-policy adjustments. O&M engineers, architects, and presales engineers can enter resource data to estimate the initial vault capacity required for new workloads and evaluate how data growth or extended retention periods affect capacity and cost. The calculator helps address challenges such as unpredictable backup-storage requirements, backup failures caused by insufficient capacity, and resource waste due to over-provisioning.

How It Works

The calculator is based on cloud backup's storage-rule model. It uses the total resource size, resource utilization, annual data growth rate, and daily data growth rate as core input parameters, together with the backup retention rule applied to the vault. It also accounts for scenarios such as sudden data spikes, backup fragmentation, and temporary restore caches. Based on these factors, the calculator estimates the cumulative space consumed by full and incremental backups, derives the theoretical storage usage according to block-level backup mechanisms, and recalculates results in real time whenever parameters change. It then outputs a recommended purchase capacity that fits the vault's pre-purchase model.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the CBR console. Click in the upper left corner and select a region.
  2. In the navigation pane, choose any backup page. The following example uses Cloud Server Backups.
  3. Configure the vault parameters based on service requirements.
  4. In the Backup Capacity area, click Capacity Calculator next to the vault capacity unit.
  5. In the dialog box displayed on the right, configure the following parameters.

    Figure 1 Capacity calculator
    • Total Resource Size: Enter the total size of the resources to be backed up. The value must be at least 10 GB.
    • Resource Utilization: Specify the routine usage frequency of the resources. Valid values range from 10 to 100, in increments of 10.
    • Annual Data Growth Rate: Enter the net increase or decrease in resource data over one year. Range: 0 to 100
    • Daily Data Change Rate: Enter the percentage of data that is modified each day. You can select a preset (based on the industry average) or define a custom value:
      • 1%: for static archives, read-only files
      • 3%: for office files, shared documents, system root disks
      • 5%: for ERP/CRM, small and medium databases
      • Custom: Set a rate from 1 to 100 based on your workload.
    • Use existing rule: Select a backup policy from the drop-down list to apply to the vault.

  6. Review the tips under Calculation Logic to understand how the estimate is derived. The estimated vault capacity is displayed in the lower right corner.

You can apply this estimate directly to the vault capacity.

  7. Configure the remaining vault parameters to complete vault creation.
