Upgrading the DB Engine Version of a DB Instance

You can upgrade the Microsoft SQL Server DB engine version to fix bugs and improve performance. DB engine version upgrades are available only for users with the required permission. You can contact customer service to apply for the permission.

Currently, only the SQL Server DB engine versions listed in Table 1 can be upgraded.

DB instances will be rebooted, services interrupted, and instance parameter settings modified during the upgrade. Therefore, perform the upgrade during off-peak hours. After the upgrade, you need to re-create a database link (please reserve the creation scripts) and reset instance parameters.

  • DB instances added to the Active Directory domain do not support DB engine version upgrades.
  • After the DB engine version is upgraded, it cannot be rolled back to an earlier version.
  • During a DB engine version upgrade, the DB instance type cannot be changed.

  1. Log in to the management console.
  2. Click in the upper left corner and select a region and a project.
  3. Click in the upper left corner of the page and choose Database > Relational Database Service. The RDS console is displayed.
  4. On the Instance Management page, click the target DB instance.
  5. In the DB Information area on the Basic Information page, click Upgrade in the DB Engine Version field.

  6. On the displayed page, select your desired DB engine version, character set, and parameter template.

    • For pay-per-use DB instances, click Submit.

  7. View the upgrade result

After the task is submitted, the DB instance status is Upgrading on the Instance Management page. You can view the DB engine version on the Basic Information page later to check whether the upgrade is successful.
