COST05-03 Regularly Reviewing and Verifying Optimization Results

  • Risk level

    High

  • Key strategies

To ensure that your cloud applications are always cost-effective, you are advised to regularly review and verify cost optimization results to determine whether there are opportunities for new optimization measures.

You can conduct review and verification at the application level based on cost allocation principles to continuously review the overall cost of each application. You can calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) by taking into account cloud resource costs, R&D costs, and operations management costs (for example, hosted cloud services vs. non-hosted cloud services). The workload of verification should align with the expected benefits (for example, the analysis time is proportional to the application cost) and whether the associated costs bring positive revenue.

When determining the frequency of review and verification, you should consider multiple factors, including the importance of cost optimization within enterprises or organizations, costs associated with test and verification, application complexity, and the adaptability of optimization changes. In addition, you can continuously improve the process, for example, by reducing the cost of testing and changes to increase the frequency of the overall optimization. Finally, after new services, resource types, and configurations are launched, you can also start the process to evaluate them to optimize the costs of your workloads.
