Function Overview

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) establishes an encrypted, Internet-based communication tunnel between your network and a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), so that you can access resources in the VPC remotely.

By default, Elastic Cloud Servers (ECSs) in a VPC cannot communicate with devices in your on-premises data center or private network. To enable communication between them, you can use a VPN.

Classic VPNs use hardware firewalls as VPN gateways, and all tenants share IPSec tunnel resources. A fault of a single tenant's service will affect all the other tenants.

A VPN uses a software-based virtual gateway, which is dedicated to a tenant, guaranteeing the bandwidth and connection quantity. A failure of a tenant's gateway will not affect other tenants' gateways.

Conventionally, to connect to different VPCs, an on-premises data center requires multiple VPN connections.
After interconnection with an enterprise router (ER) is supported, only one VPN connection is required to meet the preceding requirement by connecting the VPN gateway to an ER. The ER implements routing and communication between VPCs. Such networking greatly simplifies network configuration.

Backup Between VPN and Direct Connect allows your on-premises data center to connect to a VPC on the cloud through both Direct Connect and VPN, which back up each other. Traffic is switched to the VPN link in the event of a Direct Connect link failure, enhancing reliability.
