Huawei Cloud CAF White Paper

Huawei Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) provides guidance on migrating and deploying an on-premises environment on the cloud. This guidance is based on the cloud migration cases of many customers on Huawei Cloud and on Huawei's IT construction practices. The purpose is to help enterprises clearly define the planning, strategies, methods, and pace that will be used when going to the cloud. This information allows you to systematically prepare for cloud migration, run and govern services on the cloud, so you can ensure digital competitiveness and business success.

CAF

The CAF is divided into four sections, each one based on a different stage in the customer's transition to and use of the cloud.

  • Plan

This section analyzes the motivation for cloud migration, formulates strategies and paths for cloud migration, and plans organization personnel to ensure the migration goes off without a hitch.

  • Ready

This section describes how to build a secure and reliable landing zone on Huawei Cloud and how to build a highly available architecture on Huawei Cloud based on the powerful infrastructure that Huawei Cloud provides.

  • Adopt

This section describes the policies, procedures, and implementation of application migration to the cloud, as well as typical scenarios of data migration to the cloud.

  • Govern and Manage

This section covers O&M solutions and best practices after migration to the cloud in terms of cloud cost management, security compliance, and cloud O&M and governance. It describes how to properly use and manage the cloud once you are there.

HCAF Process

Cloud migration planning is important for cloud deployment. A good plan makes for a smooth migration.

  • Cloud Adoption Motivations

Reduce IT costs and enhance O&M efficiency, build enterprise data assets, drive E2E intelligent upgrades, enhance enterprise operations efficiency, enhance user experience, innovate digital channels, enhance security and reliability capabilities, and build global competitiveness.

  • Gap Analysis

Analyze the gap between the current and desired state, and then develop a cloud migration plan. We can start with the infrastructure, technical platform, major applications, and DFX capabilities, and create a future-oriented system design.

  • Cloud Adoption Blueprint

Design cloud migration and utilization plans of enterprises in terms of the infrastructure, application, security, reliability, and O&M operations.

  • Cloud Migration Plan and Implementation

Select an appropriate cloud migration path and pace based on the cloud migration methodology and enterprise conditions. Select appropriate pilot projects to be deployed on the cloud first in terms of risk, complexity, and business impact to verify solution feasibility. Then gradually expand the migration scope, achieving smooth and efficient cloud deployment.

  • Organization and Capability Assurance

Ensure that organizations include effective management personnel, core planners, design personnel, and implementation personnel, so the cloud migration processes can be controllable, risks minimized and value maximized.

Landing Zone Construction

Provides guidance for customers to build a secure and reliable cloud service framework in terms of the personnel accounts, organizational architecture, permissions design, financial management, network planning, and security compliance. Proper planning ensures proper cloud use.

Cloud Architecture Design Considerations

  • High Availability

    Single-AZ HA, dual-AZ HA, two-site three-center HA, and cross-cloud HA

  • Security

Network security, data security, host security, and application security

  • Scalability

    Horizontal scaling and vertical scaling

  • Cost

Cost design, cost optimization, proper bandwidth usage, and proper bandwidth usage estimation

  • Performance

Performance solution, performance check, performance monitoring, and performance tradeoff

Requirements

  • Migration Assessment

A feasible plan for cloud migration based on an assessment of the involved risks and investment

  • Switching Costs

Basic system architecture, database, middleware, and all components that support the applications

  • Technical Improvements

Gap between cloud-native technology stacks and traditional development and deployment architectures
