Configuring a Cross-Region Backup Policy
Scenarios
RDS allows you to store backups in another region. If an instance in one region fails, you can use its backups stored in another region to restore data to a new RDS instance.
After you enable the cross-region backup policy, the system will automatically replicate backups of your instance to the target region. You can manage cross-region backups on the Backups page of the RDS console. If the policy is not enabled, backups are stored in the region where your instance is located by default.
By default, each tenant can configure cross-region backup policies for up to 150 instances.
Precautions
- Cross-region backups may not ensure the timeliness of backup synchronization. After this function is enabled, backups may not be synchronized immediately to the target region.
- After you enable a cross-region log backup policy, you can restore your instance to a specified point in time only after the next automated full backup replication is complete. The specified time point must be later than the time when the automated full backup is complete.
- Specify a consistent target region for backups of all DB instances under the same tenant.
- Once a backup is created in the current region, the system asynchronously replicates it to the chosen remote region.
- Deleting an instance does not delete its cross-region backups. You need to manually disable a cross-region backup policy.
Constraints
- Encrypted backups cannot be stored across regions.
- Only backups created after you enable a cross-region backup policy will be stored in the remote region you specify.
Enabling or Modifying a Cross-Region Backup Policy
- Log in to the management console.
- Click
in the upper left corner and select a region and a project. - Click
in the upper left corner of the page and choose Database > Relational Database Service. - On the Instances page, click the target instance name.
- In the navigation pane on the left, choose Backups & Restorations. On the displayed page, choose Modify Backup Policy > Configure Cross-Region Backup Policy.
- If you enable Cross-Region Full Backup, automated full backups of the DB instance are stored in the remote region you specify.
- If you enable Cross-Region Log Backup, incremental backups of the DB instance are stored in the remote region you specify.
- Cross-region backup files can be retained from 1 to 1,825 days.
- Click OK.
- To manage cross-region backups, return to the instance list, choose Backups in the navigation pane, and click the Cross-Region Backups tab.
- By default, the system shows all instances that have cross-region backups.
- To modify the cross-region backup policy, click Set Cross-Region Backup in the Operation column.
