Description

  • Backup: A backup is a copy of a particular chunk of data and is usually stored elsewhere so that it may be used to restore the original data in the event of a data loss. By selecting Backup for Protection Type, the vault you create will be a backup vault, which stores backups.
  • Replication: It is the process of replicating backups from a source region to a destination region. By selecting Replication for Protection Type, the vault you create will be a replication vault, which stores replicated backups.

For example, if you want to back up a server in region 1, create a backup vault in this region. If you then want to replicate backups of the server to a different region, create a replication vault in that region.

FAQ

Does CBR Support Cross-Region Backup?

No. CBR only supports backup and restoration within a region but not across regions.

To use backups across regions, you can replicate backups to a destination region, use the replicated backups to create images in that region, and then use the images to provision servers.

Do I Need to Stop the Server Before Performing a Backup?

No. You can back up servers that are in use. Normally when a server is running, data is written to disks, and the latest data is cached in memory. When a server is backed up, the cached data will not be automatically written to disks, so data may be inconsistent.

To ensure backup data consistency, it is recommended that backups be scheduled at off-peak hours when no data is written to disks. If your applications have high requirements on data consistency, use application-consistent backups.
