Overview

This chapter provides backup and restoration suggestions, and describes SAP system backup requirements and methods.

SAP System Backup Requirements

SAP systems include non-production systems and the production system. Their backup requirements are as follows:

  • Non-production systems

    Backup Requirements

    Development (DEV): indicates the development system.
    • Less-frequent backup, for example, twice a week
    • Database log backup based on backup policies
    • No necessary requirement on point-in-time recovery (PITR)
    • Tolerating system shutdown
    • Simple and low-cost

    Test (TST): indicates the testing system.

    Quality Assurance (QAS): indicates the quality assurance system.

    Training (TRN): indicates the training demo system.

    Sandbox: indicates the sandbox system.
  • Production system
    • Frequent and planned backup
    • Online database backup
    • Database log backup
    • PITR
    • Database application consistency backup

SAP System Backup Methods

Different methods are described as follows:

  • File-based backup and restoration

    Back up data to a HUAWEI CLOUD EVS disk or mounted SFS file systems using an OS command tool or a related SAP application function. Then, copy the data to HUAWEI CLOUD OBS.

  • Snapshot-based backup and restoration

    Back up an EVS volume, multiple EVS volumes, or entire ECS to OBS using VBS and CSBS.

    The data backed up by CSBS can also be used to create a full-ECS image. If a fault or disaster occurs, full-ECS image can be used to quickly restore the entire ECS.

  • Backup and restoration using third-party software

    HUAWEI CLOUD supports enterprise-level third-party backup and restoration software that has been certified by SAP. The software can directly back up user file directories or databases to HUAWEI CLOUD OBS.
